Extensions: more time to file, not to pay
A reader who is out of time wants to know what an extension actually does.
Nothing here decides whether a return is due for you, what your status is, or who you may claim. Those turn on your own facts.
More time to file is not more time to pay
This one turns on the full facts, and the authority says so itself.
What the rules say
We do not work out anyone's tax, refund or balance. We explain what each rule asks for; the arithmetic belongs to you and to whatever you file with.
- An extension grants additional time to file the return. The statute fixes the time for payment separately, and the extension does not move it.
The forms involved, and what each one is
There are two different kinds of document here: ones you receive and copy from, and ones that are part of the return itself. They are easy to confuse and they behave nothing alike.
- Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return — extension request. EXTENSION_TO_FILE_DOES_NOT_EQUAL_EXTENSION_TO_PAY: it extends the time to file the return only.
What we are not saying
- Not: that an extension postpones payment.
- Not: that an extension prevents interest or additions to tax.
