Amending a return you have already filed
A reader who has spotted something wrong on a filed return wants to know what the correction route is.
Nothing here decides whether a return is due for you, what your status is, or who you may claim. Those turn on your own facts.
What the rules say
We do not work out anyone's tax, refund or balance. We explain what each rule asks for; the arithmetic belongs to you and to whatever you file with.
- A filed return is corrected by an amended return on the form the Service provides for that purpose, and the amendment states what changed and why.
The records this part asks for
- A copy of the return already filed for the year, where one was filed — A correction is made by reference to what was actually filed.
The forms involved, and what each one is
There are two different kinds of document here: ones you receive and copy from, and ones that are part of the return itself. They are easy to confuse and they behave nothing alike.
- Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return — amended return. Filing an amended return does not guarantee any particular outcome.
What we are not saying
- Not: that amending produces a refund.
- Not: that amending withdraws the original return.
