Estimated taxes when nobody withholds
Money that arrives from a platform usually arrives without anything withheld. This page says what the rules require in that situation, and what they leave to the facts.
What the rules say
True whichever side of the class line you are on
- An addition to tax applies where required instalments of estimated tax are underpaid, subject to the statutory exceptions and safe harbours.
- Amounts withheld from wages are treated as payments of estimated tax, and increasing withholding is an alternative to making separate payments.
- Estimated tax is paid for stated payment periods with their own due dates, which do not correspond to calendar quarter ends.
What a person would have to know first
These are the facts the rules turn on. We do not supply any of them for you.
- total tax for the year and total payments and credits made
True whichever side of the class line you are on
- Wages received as an employee are not net earnings from self-employment.
Where the person is carrying on a business of their own
Some of what follows exists only on one side of the class line. Where the class is not settled, we state the condition and stop rather than guessing which side you are on.
- A tax is imposed on the self-employment income of every individual, computed on net earnings from self-employment.
- Net earnings from self-employment means gross income derived from the trade or business less the deductions allowed and attributable to it.

- that a trade or business is being carried on
What this page will never do
We do not calculate an amount for anyone. Nothing here produces a figure for your return.
There is no calculator here, no percentage to apply and no figure to set aside. Those depend on a full year of facts and on the class question, and getting them wrong in either direction is expensive.
